Australian Banks Bow To Apple Pay Ruling

Apple PayThe Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) have ruled that some of Australia's biggest banks are not allowed to collectively bargain with Apple and effectively make it possible to boycott Apple Pay in Australia.

Westpac, NAB, Bendigo, Adelaide and Commonweath Banks proposed that they collectively bargain with Apple however, the ACCC has proposed that this not be allowed.

You may notice that ANZ is not in that list. ANZ stepped away from it's rival banks earlier this year and did it's own deal with Apple. ANZ has since introduced Apple Pay and apparently has gained customers as a result. I know that I find it very handy and totally support the introduction of the payment system.

ACCC chairman, Rod Sims slammed the lobby group saying that they had failed to conclusively demonstrate how customers would benefit from the four banks collectively bargaining with Apple. Burned!
