Instagram’s New “Bulk Upload” Feature

Instagram launched a new feature which lets you share up 10 photos or videos in one post. If you are a user of the media sharing app, get ready because I am sure you will be inundated with even more photos of meals and cats.

One commentator said this -

"The good news is that you can share a whole bunch of your photos and videos at once, so your friends can all see the fabulous things you're doing. The bad news is that they can do the same"

Some functionality included in the new feature includes changing the order, editing images individually or choosing a filter that will apply to all items you are sharing. However, all images will share the same caption.

For viewers, we will not be swamped by all of the images at once. Instead, there will be series of dots underneath when you view one image which indicates that you can swipe to see more images.

Instagram has a smaller market share in the media sharing space than competitors like Twitter and Facebook. Maybe they are hoping to change that by giving their users the ability to upload more images at once. But I think there are other ways to increase their user base. The fact that Instagram images must be square (otherwise parts of your image are cropped out) just seems like lazy coding to me. As a developer, it takes some work to nicely render a series of images that are different sizes. But if all images are square ... voila ... simple. Another idea might be to extend their support to Windows phone. Currently, Instagram is only available on iOS and Android.

Feel free to comment on whether you think this feature will be successful or not.
